Chlorine allergy
There are many kinds of allergies, like allergy to food, vegetables, certain fruits, allergy to cats and dogs, pollen, dust mites, and mold. These are common allergies. There are some not too common allergies like allergy to chlorine, iodine and licorice.
Chlorine allergy again is not a common allergy. Chlorine is one of the most toxic chemicals, but incidence of allergy against it, is relatively small. Chlorine allergy is classified as a ‘Type 4’ allergy. This is characterized by itchiness in the armpit area and the groin area. An individual who is sensitive to chlorine will develop an adverse reaction while swimming, or from tap water, which could contain chlorine. Sometimes household and laundry cleaning products contain chlorine. The individual should avoid these products. While swimming it is advised to take a shower before and after coming out from the pool, to wash away the chemical from the body. Now there is a lotion available, which one can apply while swimming. This acts as a barrier between the body skin and the chemical.
Iodine allergy is a very rare occurrence. This happens when iodine is injected directly as a dye into the body for a procedure like an x-ray, or directly onto the skin.
Another not too common allergy is licorice allergy. Licorice is a plant belonging to the legumes or peas family.
